Trademarks & brand names

The names, logos, product names and system names listed on this page are trademarks or service marks of Society OS Pty Ltd. They identify the origin of our products, services and systems and distinguish them from those of others.

Unless otherwise indicated, the marks below are unregistered common-law trademarks and are styled with the ™ symbol. ™ denotes a claimed trademark; it does not indicate registration. Where a mark is later registered, it will carry the ® symbol instead.

Several of our frameworks — most notably F-ACT™ (the Framework for Agent Conformance & Trust) — are published as open standards that anyone is free to read, cite and implement. Openness applies to the specification, not the name: the trademark protects the name so that it continues to identify the authentic standard. This is the same posture used by open technologies such as Linux™, Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth®.

Nothing on this page grants any right or licence to use these marks. They may not be used in a way that is likely to cause confusion about origin, sponsorship or endorsement, or in any manner that disparages Society OS Pty Ltd. Requests to use a mark can be directed to us.

Open standards & trademarks

Several of the marks listed below — F-ACT™, GUARD™, R-EAL™, T-RUE™ and the conformance marks built on them — are the names of open standards. Trademarking an open standard is not a contradiction; it is best practice. Here is why:

Quality control

The trademark lets the steward ensure that anything called “F-ACT conformant” actually meets the published specification — preventing dilution by forks, partial implementations or marketing misuse.

Prevent confusion

Without a protected name, anyone could publish a different specification under the same name. Enterprises, auditors and regulators need confidence that “F-ACT” means one thing.

Enable certification

A trademark is the legal foundation for a future certification programme. When the planned Foundation launches formal certification, the protected mark is what makes the certificate meaningful.

No conflict with openness

Openness is guaranteed by the royalty-free patent pledge and liberal conformance licensing — not by the absence of a trademark. W3C®, Linux™, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth® and C2PA all follow this same pattern.

When the planned Swiss foundation (Open Conformance Coalition) is established, ownership of the standards-related marks will transfer to the Foundation. The Foundation charter will include a liberal trademark-licensing policy for conformant implementations.
